Welcome to the interactive blog for COSEE-TEK's 2013 Ocean Technology Challenge. This Spring, COSEE-TEK is collaborating with LSAMP - UConn and the Northeast Alliance Partners; Worcester Polytechnic Institute, University of Rhode Island, Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts to provide hands on experience for underrepresented college students in the fields of Ocean Science & Technology.

The aim of this blog is to encourage collaboration between students, researchers, and universities for those who will be developing ocean technology project and those who will only be participating in the April 6th workshop. Feel free to share ideas, ask questions of COSEE-TEK staff, update us on your progress, and provide us with links to helpful resources that you have found online.

For those taking on the Ocean Science and Technology Challenge, the link below provides an image that summarizes our discussions of sampling needs. Use this figure to guide your decisions about what you would like to sample or measure and then move on to brainstorming what you can build to affordably accomplish that task.

Useful Definitions:

  1. Sampler - A mechanical device that is used to physically collect something from the ocean (e.g. sediment, plankton, water)
  2. Sensor - A device (usually electronic) that receives a signal or stimulus (e.g., heat, pressure, light or motion) and responds to it in a distinctive manner device to measure some parameter (e.g. current, light, temperature, DO) in real time or over a period of recorded time.
